Louisiana Becomes Latest State to Ban College Player Props

More states are banning college player props, and Louisiana is the most recent state to join the fold.

Louisiana will ban college player props starting before the college football season, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board announced Wednesday. The ban will not go into effect until Aug. 1, 2024, one month before the LSU Tigers open their season.

Louisiana banned betting on player props in college athletics after the NCAA made a request last week.

NCAA president Charlie Baker requested that all states with legal sports betting ban college player props, citing the integrity of the game and player safety.

"Sports betting issues are on the rise across the country with prop bets continuing to threaten the integrity of competition and leading to student-athletes and professional athletes getting harassed," Baker said in a statement. "The NCAA has been working with states to deal with these threats, and many are responding by banning college prop bets."

Maryland, Ohio and Vermont are a few of the other states that have recently instituted a ban. There could be more states joining the fold if the NCAA makes a request, such as New Jersey and North Carolina, which launched legal online sports betting on March 11.

Many states have cited the protection of student-athletes from being harassed or influenced as a reason not to have college player props. Some states, such as Illinois, New York, Massachusetts and Virginia, have also banned bets on in-state college teams.
